Protein – Chicken breast works fine but you can also go for chicken legs and boneless chicken thighs. You can even cut up a whole chicken with multiple chicken pieces.
Seasonings- include black pepper, cajun seasoning, minced garlic, onion powder, and garlic powder.
Tablespoons of cornstarch- This is used to make the cooking liquid(gravy) thicker.
Butter- The butter helps to sear the chicken, leaving you with browned bits at the bottom of the pot. That adds additional flavor.
Chicken Broth- This will make a savory broth.

How do you make Southern stewed chicken?
Step 1: Begin with chopping all of your vegetables
Step: 2: Preheat your pot to medium-high heat
Step 3:Season your chicken well.
Step 4: In a pan add in your butter and olive oil.
Step 5: Add your chicken into the pan and place a lid on the pot for about 10 minutes. At the halfway mark(5 minutes) flip the chicken and add the top back on for the remaining time.
Step 6: Remove the chicken from the pan.
Step 7: In the same pot add in your chop carrots, chopped onions, and minced garlic. Allow to cook until they become tender
Step 8: Mix your chicken broth and cornstarch. Once the cornstarch has dissolved add the mixture to the pot. Allow to come to a boil and add in your chopped potatoes.
Step 9: Once you add in your potatoes, immediately add in your seasonings and bay leaves, and stir.
Step 10: Add your browned chicken back into the pot and stir. Place the lid on the pot turn your stove to medium-low and allow to simmer for 30 minutes or until your meat is thoroughly cooked and your gravy has thickened.

- Make it into a Spanish stewed chicken by adding bell pepper, bay leaves, and tomato sauce.
- Add cumin, chili powder, and green chilies to make it Mexican-style.

Substitutions
- If you don’t have carrots on hand you can also use green beans to give you that boost of nutrition.
- Cornstarch can be replaced with all-purpose flour.

- 3 Cups Chicken broth

- 1 Cup Diced Onion
- 1 Carrot
- 2 Russet Potatoes or Baby Potatoes
Chicken Seasoning
- 1 Tbsp Garlic Powder
- 1 Tbsp Pepper
- 1 Tbsp Seasoning Salt
Stew Chicken Gravy Seasoning
- Salt To Taste To Taste
- Pepper To Taste To Taste
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1 Bay Leave
- 1 Tsp Garlic Powder Optional
Instructions
- Begin with chopping all your vegetables (onion, carrots, and potatoes).1 Cup Diced Onion, 2 Russet Potatoes, 1 Carrot
- Preheat your pot to medium-high heat
- Season your chicken thighs in a bowl with garlic powder, pepper, and seasoning salt1 Tbsp Garlic Powder, 1 Tbsp Pepper, 1 Tbsp Seasoning Salt
- In a pan add in your butter and olive oil2 Tbsp Butter, 1 Tbsp Olive oil
- Once the butter has melted down add your chicken into the pan and place a lid on the pot for about 10 minutes. At the halfway mark (5 minutes) flip the chicken and add the top back on for the remaining time.3 Chicken Breast
- Take your chicken out and place it to the side on a clean plate
