Healthy Cajun Fries

What Are Cajun Fries?

If you have ever had Popeyes, Cookout, or Five Guys cajun fries, then you would have some idea of what they are. They are French fries that are usually fried, but we are going for the healthier alternative and baking them. As a certified nutrition coach, this is what I recommend. So, these little low-calorie snacks need no vegetable or peanut oil.

Baked Cajun Fries

Ingredients For Cajun Fries

  • Russet Potatoes- They are considered to be best when baking potatoes.
  • Creole Seasoning—You can use store-bought creole seasoning or my homemade spice recipe, which consists of paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, onion powder, and more.
  • Olive Oil- This allows the fries to become crispy and golden brown.

How To Make Baked Cajun Fries?

Preheat- Allow your oven to preheat to 400 degrees.

Peel and Cut— Wash, peel, and cut your fries into thin strips, about ¼ inches thick.

Soak– This will help to remove any starch.

Lined Baking Sheet- Layer the potatoes onto the baking sheet.

Bake—Place in the oven for 15 minutes, remove, flip, and then return to the oven until golden brown.

Season- Add your cajun seasoning to your liking.

Variations/ Substitutions

Low Sodium—Change the fry seasoning and choose a lower-sodium option, such as Himalayan salt or Dash.

Butter—If you want to add a little more flavor, try drizzling some melted butter over the top of these oven-baked fries.

Cajun Chili Fries—Add some chili to these fries to give them that pop of taste and texture!

Sweet Potatoes—Instead of russet potatoes, try using sweet potatoes. They are also a healthier version.

Heating

You can reheat French fries in the oven. I advise against the microwave as they tend to get slightly soggy and lose that extra crispy texture.

Equipment

  • Baking Tray—The tray will help layer the potatoes so they aren’t stacked on one another.
  • Parchment Paper- This will help prevent the Cajun fries from sticking to the pan.

What To Pair With Fries?

  • Steak- I feel like steak and fries complement one another.
  • Baked ChickenYou can be versatile with baked chicken and Cajun fries. You can turn the chicken into a sandwich and serve fries on the side.

Turkey BurgerTry adding these baked Cajun fries to the side of a burger and watch your tastebuds dance.
