What Is French Onion Chicken?
Chicken with French onion soup is one recipe that some may get confused with French onion chicken, but they are different. This baked French onion chicken skillet recipe has chicken as its main star. The pan-seared chicken is seared up for about 2 to 3 minutes in a large skillet with butter and olive oil. Next, it’s cooked up until golden brown. In addition, tender chicken breasts are topped with a bed of sweet caramelized onion, making the perfect caramelized onion sauce at the bottom of the pan. You can also enjoy this French onion chicken skillet as a soup. I am definitely considered a Southern comforting dish.
Ingredients For French Onion Chicken Skillet
Here are the items you will need on your shopping list.

- Salt-The salt in this recipe is in moderation. You can go heavier if you like.
- Pepper-A little bit of pepper goes a long way in this French onion skillet recipe.
- Garlic Cloves- Make sure to mince the garlic before cooking. You can also use minced garlic if you would like.
- White Onion-This will help to bring a ton of flavor to your recipe.
- Fresh Parsley- This step is optional, but if you love the fresh taste of parsley, then you are good to go.
- Sargento Sliced Swiss Cheese – You can use this type of cheese in this dinner recipe. Mozzarella cheese, Gruyere Cheese, Gouda cheese, and more. It all depends. Try to make sure that the cheese melts nicely. All cheese isn’t created equal.

How To Make French Onion Chicken Skillet?
I like to call this recipe my weight watchers french onion chicken.
I can assure you that the French onion chicken skillet is packed with a ton of protein and flavor, not to mention that it’s a somewhat healthy, easy chicken dinner you can make for your loved ones.
1) To a medium-heat skillet, you want to add in your butter. Melt butter. Next, add your onions, garlic, and cook until softened/caramelized. Remove and set to the side.
2) Season chicken front and back. Add to the same skillet. Turn stove to medium-low. Allow to sear on both sides for 3 minutes. Brown bits left in the pot are ok.
3) Add the caramelized onions and melted Swiss cheese to the chicken breast top.
4) Lastly, add your cream of chicken soup. Carefully mix around. Add to a preheated oven of 375 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165.
5) Top with fresh chopped parsley, and enjoy!
Substitutions
If you don’t want to use boneless skinless chicken breasts, I have come up with other meat you can use in this chicken recipe. That will have the same results.
- Boneless skinless chicken thighs– Use boneless chicken thighs to make this skillet French onion chicken. The bone-in chicken thigh doesn’t work because this recipe is meant initially for boneless chicken breast. The onions and the melted cheese are hard to consume if the bone is in the chicken thighs.
- Tender chicken breasts– Chicken tenders are pretty small, so you don’t need to put the onion mixture on top but anywhere in the pan.
- Pork Chops– Cook the pork chops just as you would the chicken breast, which is explained above in the how-to steps. The crispy fried onions can be placed on top of the pork chops. I would recommend using a thicker cut of pork chops.
- Turkey Breast– The same thing goes for the turkey breast but try not to sear the turkey breast for more than 3 minutes because the turkey can become extremely dry.
Variations
Dry white wine- if you want to spruce up this meal, add about a tablespoon of white wine to the skillet.
Crock Pot French Onion Chicken- You can also place this recipe in the crockpot. It will only take a longer time to cook.
Casserole- Transfer to a baking dish if you want to turn things into a casserole. I have personally done this, and it reminded me of knorr casserole recipes.
Equipment
- Cast Iron Skillet-This will help with the browning and caramelizing of the chicken.
- Utensils– Using a fork and knife to cut your meat will help.
Storage
When it comes to storing this French onion chicken skillet, you want to make sure that you use an airtight container to keep the single-layer chicken fresh.
