Grocery Store List For Southern Baked Beans

The ingredients for these homemade baked beans are yet again easy to find in the grocery store. They are simple ingredients; there shouldn’t be any running around trying to find them. The ingredients are as follows.

Baked Beans When making the best baked beans recipe, I didn’t use any other type of beans but Bush Baked Beans. I know you can use other beans, such as navy beans. I use these beans because they come already cooked. You only need to warm the beans.

Lil Smokies Sausages– use them or any sausage of your liking.

Slices of Bacon, you don’t want to buy the thin bacon. The thin bacon isn’t as enjoyable as the thick bacon.

Brown Sugar The brown sugar gives this recipe a hint of sweetness. You can purchase any brand of brown sugar for this recipe.

White Sugar adding a sprinkle of white sugar will compliment the brown sugar and give the beans a somewhat sweet taste.

Sweet Onion Adding the onion will give these beans a sweet and savory taste. So, it’s safe to say onions heighten this recipe’s sweetness.

Mustard gives the beans a tangy flavor, which works together well with all the sweetness in this recipe.

Honey– I used honey as a sweetener in this recipe. You can also replace the honey with molasses if you would like.

Ketchup– in any recipe adds flavor.

Seasonings– Black pepper, garlic powder, and salt. All of these ingredients are used to help balance the sweetness in this easy baked beans recipe.

How to make Southern Baked Beans?

Southern baked beans are super easy to make. Everything literally can be placed into one pot. I love using a Dutch oven pot for this baked beans recipe.

1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Chop your onion into small pieces. In the same pot add in your onions and allow to cook.

2. To the same pot, add in your Lit’l smokies and allow them to cook until they become slightly brown.

3. After the onions and sausages have browned. Turn the stove off of the baked beans. Next, add your beans, chopped bacon, brown sugar, honey, ketchup, mustard, and sugar to the same pot and stir until the yellow mustard is dissolved.

4. Add your pot to your preheated oven for 40 minutes, remove and enjoy!

Variations

Ground beef Baked Beans- The best part about these tender beans is that you can add just about any meat to this can of beans to make a great recipe!

Spicy Southern Baked Beans- Add some spicy BBQ sauce to add a kick of spice and smoky flavor. You can even add in a few sprinkles of Cajun seasoning.

Salt Pork- You can switch things up by adding a couple of slices of salty pork, in other words, fatback pork!

Leftover Ham Bone- If you have any leftover ham from Thanksgiving or Sunday dinner, you can throw that into your family dinner to make the perfect food recipe.

Equipment For Baked Beans

You will need a large skillet to ensure that you have room for all the extra liquid in the original recipe.

How To Store Baked Beans

In addition, leftover baked beans can be easily stored for the next day in an airtight container. The added sugar and syrupy sauce should be stored as soon as you are finished eating your British baked beans.

This particular recipe should be reheated in the microwave or the oven once the thick sauce becomes much liquid. You are ready to enjoy your delicious baked beans.

Different Ways To Cook Baked Beans

Instant Pot- If you want to try to place things into the instant pot add the ingredients and follow this recipe for the best for the best results.

Slow Cooker- You can use a crock pot to cook your perfect side dish. You will have wait a long time but you won’t have to stand over the stove waiting on the actual cooking time to be completed.

Stove Top Cast Iron Skillet- add your baked beans to a cast iron skillet and cook them over the stove, oven, and even in the air fryer. This is the perfect camp-baked beans.
