Ingredients You Will Need Southern Chocolate Cake
All-purpose flour will help create the taste of this simple chocolate cake recipe. Flour doesn’t have an overbearing taste, which allows the cake to really shine and you to enjoy the flavor thoroughly.
Unsweetened Cocoa Powder- is used in entire chocolate cake for its intense chocolate flavor, ability to balance sweetness, smooth texture, darker color, versatility in baking, and potential health benefits.
White sugar—This sugar adds sweetness to this fluffy cake. If you are on a keto diet, you will need to use other alternatives, such as monk fruit sugar.
Vegetable Oilis used in chocolate cake to keep it moist, add richness, enhance the texture, and make it more tender.
How To Make Southern Chocolate Cake
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
First, we will need to gather all our ingredients: all-purpose flour, eggs, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, buttermilk, vanilla extract, water, salt, honey, oil, and sugar!
You can spray the bottom of your baking pan with nonstick spray or butter it. It’s your preference.
Grab a mixing bowl and stir in flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Make sure everything is blended for the best results for a fluffy chocolate cake.
Grab a separate mixing bowl and add eggs, oil, buttermilk, and vanilla extract, then slowly whisk in boiling water.
Now, stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.Pour batter into the baking dish.
Place in the oven for 30-35 minutes. Check if the cake is ready in around 28 minutes because every oven is different. To make sure the cake is done, stick a toothpick in the cake. Remove the toothpick; if the toothpick is dry, the cake is done. If the toothpick comes out wet, let it bake a little longer.
Once done, remove the cake and place it on a cooling rack to cool for about 10-15 minutes. Then, you can start frosting your cake! I frosted my cake with store-bought chocolate icing and added some chocolate chips to the sides. For the sake of time, I will have my homemade chocolate buttercream frosting version listed below in the instructions.
Substitutions
Whole Milk- If you do not like buttermilk, you can use whole milk, 2% milk, reduced fat, or skim milk. It’s your preference.
Unsweetened/Sweetened Cocoa Powder- These will do the trick in this recipe.
Kosher Salt—If you aren’t a big fan of pure salt, you can try switching things up with sea salt or Himalayan salt.
What To Pair with Southern Chocolate Cake
Vanilla Ice Cream- A scoop of vanilla ice cream would pair perfectly with this Southern chocolate cake.
Caramel Sauce– This and the vanilla ice cream can pair well with this Southern chocolate cake. If. You don’t necessarily want the scoop of vanilla ice cream. You can drizzle the caramel sauce over the top.
Storage/Reheating
This Southern chocolate cake recipe requires an airtight container or cake pan. Storing things in a cake pan will ensure your cake stays moist and doesn’t ruin. You can refrigerate for later use. Once ready to eat, remove the cake from the fridge and warm it in the oven for 15 seconds or until warm.
Southern Chocolate Cake
Chocolate cake has always been one of my weaknesses. I love to accompany this recipe with ice cream or milk. Oh, the many flavors chocolate cake can send to your taste buds……yummy! This easy moist chocolate cake literally melts in your mouth.
Spray the bottom of your pans with nonstick spray or rub a small amount of butter to the bottom of cake pan.
Non-Stick Spray
Grab a separate mixing bowl. Add in your flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix those ingredients together well
1/2 Cup Sweetened Cocoa powder, 2 Cup White Sugar, 2 Cup All-purpose flour, 2 Teaspoon baking soda, 1 Teaspoon baking powder, ½ Teaspoon Salt
Now stir the wet ingredients to the previous mixture( eggs, buttermilk, hot water, and vanilla extract). Use an electric mixer to mix ingredients for about 2 to 3 minutes.
2 Large Eggs, 1 Cup Boiling Hot water, 1 Cup Whole buttermilk, 1 Cup Vegetable oil, 1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Pour the mixture evenly into cake pan.
Place in the oven for 35 minutes. Start checking if the cake is ready around 30 minutes because everyone oven is a little different. To make sure the cake is done stick a toothpick in the cake. If the toothpick is dry the cake is done. If the toothpick comes out wet. Allow the cake bake the remaining time left.
Once done, take the cake out to cool for about 10-15 minutes. Then you can start frosting your cake! I frosted my cake with store purchased chocolate cake mix
